Dr. Andrew Edmonds and his team of professionals at 4405 Dental Studio in Georgetown, TX are committed to helping area patients achieve healthy, beautiful smiles. Not only does this include preventative care, but it also includes restorative procedures such as the placement of porcelain dental crowns. Also known as “caps” for the teeth, dental crowns play a vital role in general and restorative dentistry.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dr. Andrew Edmonds describes the dental crown as a cap for a natural tooth made of porcelain. Porcelain is a material commonly used in dentistry as it is beautiful, natural-looking, strong, and durable. At 4405 Dental Studio, our professionals use dental crowns in many different situations. A dental crown may be used to:

  • Cover a tooth that has experienced extensive damage, such as a large cavity
  • Protect a tooth that may have been weakened by procedures such as root canal therapy
  • Connect with false teeth to create a dental bridge for missing teeth
  • Cover a dental implant abutment to act as a false tooth

How Is A Dental Crown Made?

The dental crown is fabricated through a process that involves an outside dental laboratory and ceramist. First, the tooth is prepared prior to impressions made to get a physical copy of the tooth’s current structure. These molds are sent to a dental laboratory where a ceramist will fabricate the dental crown with specific instructions from Dr. Andrew Edmonds of 4405 Dental Studio. This includes information regarding the shape, color, and size of the completed restoration. The dental crown is sent to the clinic for patients to return for the final bonding of the restoration in place. The entire process can take approximately one to two weeks but provides coverage and protection for many years!
